How to Score Good in English ( Class XII )

Consistency and Practice

With regular and minimum efforts I was able to score 98 in English CBSE 2019 exams. Very crisply I will summarize the approach I followed. My teacher also played an instrumental role in helping me with suffice material and support.

  • _LITERATURE SECTION_
  1. For literature, read each and every word of the book. At times, when question is unexpected even turning active to passive voice does wonder.
  2. Note down short phrases and important words which can be used as it is for writing answers. Maintain a diary for that. Try to write an answer with connection of thoughts and incidences. This will come from regular reading of the book.
  3. Refer to various online interpretations of the poems in literature. Most importantly, practice questions that have appeared in last years’ paper. Online KV material is also very helpful.
  4. Don’t write big answers, or very short answers. The paper is lengthy so make sure you just write the suffice amount.
  5. Underline the main points or flow of words that can help the examiner to read them quickly and get the whole gist of the answer. If you save their time of reading, they really do appreciate that.
  6. Character sketch of the characters in the story. Well, this is an easy trick which adds up to the quality of the answers.
  7. CBSE Answer Keys, the ultimate guide! This is something 99% of the students miss but the actual secret of getting potential full marks in literature lies here. With the question papers, CBSE also releases an answer key. It comprises of bullet points mostly. Try to imbibe those points when writing answer to the similar question. Examiner is bound to give marks from that key, irrespective of anything you’ve written.
  • _WRITING SECTION_
  1. The topics are unpredictable but still by following certain steps you have high potential of getting full marks in this section
  2. Formats of the writing skills. Use pencil and scale. Keep it very neat with correct and updated formats as per CBSE.
  3. Vocabulary- Keep 20–30 difficult words handy and use them all in this section. Trust me, it does magic.
  4. Learn basic Idioms and phrases to add.
  5. Beautification of language. Alright, that’s my personal trick. Write the simplest things in very beautiful and twisted manner. But, make sure you use this trick once in every literature answer and twice or thrice in some informal writing skills. For example, in a story writing, it was required to define a place similar to a jungle. I decided to put it up like this- “In the leaves of the bushes, and the tease of the breeze, there was a pleasant sense of joy for her. Something in the winds learnt her name and she realized that things were not the same.”
  6. Poetry in poster making or informal letter writing. Alright, if you’re a poet or have a good command over language, make a use out of it. I won’t insist everyone to follow this. But, I personally did that. For a poster making related to Save Water I penned down a short 8 lines poetry with illustrations. Creativity comes in different ways. You can even consider doing bit calligraphy or designing but adhere to the time constraints. Skip this, if you’re not comfortable doing it. On a very basic level, go for quotations and mention the thinker. They get easy brownie points.
  • _NOVEL_
  1. The questions are very much repetitive here, similar to the literature section. As per my observation, preparing main events/incidences in the story and character sketch is suffice to write a good answer. You can prepare them even without reading the novel, because I did that as well. I didn’t read the novel at all. I preferred online summaries or the movie. I took a glance over the novel for difficult words and phrases to put in the answer.
  • _PRESENTATION_
  1. Use pencil and scale (don’t prefer the regular short scale, it takes time) for highlights. At the end, make a line after each answer and a double line after each section if your got enough time. Use black pen for headings if allowed. We weren’t allowed to use.
  2. Prefer cursive writing with ample spacing and maintain that throughout. It gives you a speed and extends the answers.
  3. Time Management is very important in this paper. Divide your time as per the sections and your requirement for each. Have bare minimum 10 minutes at the end to revise and underline key points. Don’t forget assembling of the sheets! :)

All the Best!

Thanks for reading!
